The company says this is one of a number of sustainability programmes it runs, which will contribute strongly to the improvement of the environment.
Lisa Hegh, environmental manager at BJ Ball Group, said the group had aimed to plant 1,000 trees. She said, “Such was the enthusiasm that we ended up more than doubling that figure and covering about one hectare”.
The Motuihe Trust intends to restore the natural environment on the now pest-free island by helping plant native trees grown in the island’s own nursery. Supporting this effort, BJ Ball’s tree-planting volunteers, about 100 strong, planted a mixture of young manuka, nikau, totara, and puriri.
The volunteers all agreed they had greatly enjoyed contributing to such a worthwhile project. The day ended with a beach barbecue. BJ Ball hopes to make it an annual event.
