He will train the ‘Tool Black’ competitor, Kieran Dale, who is employed by Logick Print & Graphics in Penrose, Auckland. Kieran was selected for the Tool Blacks team after he won gold in Printing at the 2006 SkillEX Nationals, which was sponsored by B J Ball Papers and Trust 4 Skills.
Shane has been in the printing trade for 27 years. He began his career as an apprentice for a local paper in Wellington and went on to qualify with a Trade Certificate in Sheet-fed printing.
Shane worked his way through the ranks as head printer and then plant manager to his current level and is keen to promote the benefits of taking on an apprenticeship. He also takes on the role of Apprentice Assessor for PMP (NZ) Inc and judges at the NZ Pride In Print Awards.
Shane says he sees attending WorldSkills as a great opportunity to observe what other countries have to offer regarding training techniques and skill levels and to see how New Zealand apprentices and training programmes compare on the international stage.
“I feel very privileged to be taking our first printing apprentice to the WorldSkills competition. We finally get the opportunity to show the rest of the World that New Zealand’s printing standards are up there with the best of them.”
PrintNZ. PrintNZ CEO, Joan Grace, says she is a committed supporter of SkillEX.
