Graphic designer Tim Wightman joins 25 young New Zealanders this week, competing in the inaugural WorldSkills Oceania regional competitions at Wintec in Hamilton.
Over 100 competitors have come from Canada, India, Malaysia, China, Australia and Korea to compete in 30 skill categories. Wightman competes as the Graphic Design Tool Black. Currently a student at Auckland’s YooBee ACG School of Design, he will soon graduate and begin work at i-merch Media in Auckland.
If he does well, he stands a chance of securing a position in the team to compete at the world finals in Brazil in August.
The NZ WorldSkills team will compete in 18 skill categories ranging from aircraft maintenance to the various auto and engineering trades, carpentry, joinery, plumbing and heating and go through to floristry, hairdressing, restaurant trades and web and graphic design. Each competitor has undergone a personalised, hands-on mentoring programme to ensure they have the best shot at winning a medal. This includes mental toughness training developed exclusively for WorldSkills New Zealand competitors.
Founded in 1986 as an independent, non-profit charitable trust, WorldSkills New Zealand aims at encouraging young people to excel in vocational skills.
