Recently, mainland printers, their staff, creatives, and their clients combined with BJ Ball and PrintNZ to raise money for the fight against breast cancer.
The pink ribbon breakfast took place at the George Hotel in Christchurch, attended by a sell-out crowd of 80. The event has taken on a life of its own and, this year, Heather Letfus from PrintNZ performed the formalities before showing a video clip from the New Zealand Breast cancer Foundation. The NZBCF website has seven of these clips depicting seven different women and their stories. Pink ribbon breakfast organise Mhairi Flett says that they selected Lea’s story because, “despite her difficult journey she has a great message of taking control of your situation, survival and a positive approach to life.”
The event raised over $1500. Flett says the breast cancer foundation appreciates the ongoing support from the print community. She says, “We enjoyed incredible support with tickets selling out well before the event. We had originally capped numbers at 70 but managed to squeeze in an extra 10. Everyone wore a splash of pink and were incredibly generous with purchasing raffle tickets, NZBCF pink merchandise and flowers.
Unsold flowers were donated to Ranui House which provides accommodation for patients from all hospital departments and their families from throughout New Zealand, who are facing coming to Christchurch for treatment.
Events like this can’t happen without sponsors. Flett says, “Besides the support from BJ Ball and PrintNZ, we also need to mention the George Hotel, for a magnificent breakfast and beautiful room set up and very attentive staff; and Aromaunga Baxters Flowers who kindly donated flowers to be sold as an additional fundraiser.”
Everyone who attended the event looks forward to a repeat next year. She concludes, “It’s a great opportunity for creative, printers, and their customers to get together and all for such a good cause.”
