Best in show and platinum winners

Mini bottles of evian water have taken out the best in show for this year’s Pentawards, a multinational competition for packaging design. Designed by French agency Grand Angle, evian’s Pure Drop bottles have the same capacity as a glass of water. Designers say the bottles aim to create a new ‘ritual of consumption’ for the consumer: I’m thirsty, I grab a Drop, I open the lid, I drink, I collapse it with one hand and drop the package in the recycle bin. Besides the best in show, top honours for beverages went to the four million Absolut Originality bottles, created by Sweden’s Happytear, which follows on from last year’s Absolut run of individually designed bottles with a different effect for each. Each Absolut bottle has a drop of cobalt blue infused into its glass, added just as the molten glass goes into the mould at 1100°C and streaming down to create a unique streak of blue. China’s Pesing Design Agency took out the food platinum for its Qian Gift rice, which follows the product’s philosophy of using ancient methods and no modern manufacturing techniques. The plant fibre envelope is made by local paper-makers, and since indigo is used in the local region of Guizhou province to dye clothes, it was adopted for printing the information on the packaging, all applied by hand. An ethereal light pattern effect won Greek designer Mousegraphics its body platinum win for Beatific skin care products, translucent materials and four colour iridescent palette following on from the brief to reflect a communion with the divine. In the broad category of other markets Studio Kluif from The Netherlands came out on top with its Blonde Poulain printer paper package, which features the scanned faces of the company’s staff. A luxurious box of ham, crowned with a golden model pig, won the luxury platinum award. Spanish agency Lavernia & Cienfuegos designed the package and tray for the Iberian ham to sit next to other more common high-end delicacies, such as caviar and foie gras.
