Many young printmakers are interested in Letterpress

The Association of Handcraft Printers (AHP) will host a national Wayzgoose in September.

The one-day event heads to the Hawkes Bay on September 17.

Graham Judd, Inkiana Press owner, says, “The Wayzgoose is open to all who have an interest in the likes of printing and bookbinding. It also presents an opportunity for the letterpress community to meet. We welcome printers and others who may be interested to know more of what we are up to.”

The programme for the day includes visits to Imprimo Print Studio in Havelock North and Neighbour’s Press in Hastings; a swap meet at Deco Print in Napier and a barbecue dinner at the Napier RSA.

The word Wayzgoose historically refers to an annual summer dinner or outing held by a printing house for its employees. Some bookbinders believe that Wayzgoose was held on St Bartholomew’s Day because he was the patron saint of leather workers. The holiday, a break in printing, was traditionally also the day that papermakers took a break from making paper for the printers.
