Brent Jameson, communications manager Konica Minolta, says, “The Rugby League Reads programme provides a fantastic opportunity for Kiwi children to learn the valuable life skills of reading and writing alongside their favourite Warriors heroes. This latest initiative also places printed material into the hands of a new generation, and that has to be a good thing for everyone in our industry.”

Children and schools involved in the programme will receive two New Zealand books: “Henry & the Flea” by Brian Faulkner and “Papa’s Donuts” by Kate Moetaua. The eight selected schools will also each receive two Canterbury Rugby League balls and the student who composes the winning overall story/poem will receive a signed 2009 Vodafone Warriors Rugby League Jersey.

Jameson adds, “We are also giving each school that entered a book (perfect bound on our production machines) of all the stories entered.”

Wayne Scurrah, chief executive Vodafone Warriors, says, “With Rugby League Reads we’re trying to make a positive difference in a critical area of learning for children”.

Michael Luck, senior Vodafone Warriors player, believes professional sports people need to have a wider perspective on life. He says, “Players need to have more in their lives than simply training and playing. We all need balance and these programmes, which help our young people, are a great opportunity to make a difference. Helping kids with literacy and encouraging them to enjoy reading is a really positive way to go.”
