The five winners and 18 finalists chosen from a total of 900 diverse entries, ranged from a multi-piece brochure set for a New York real estate development to remarkable purely graphical promotional piece for a Chinese paper company.
Maria Aggelonitis, Mohawk’s International Sales Manager visiting with the show, finds it fascinating to observe how integral the paper choice was to the successful execution of the outstanding projects.
Of particular note for New Zealand printers, she said, was that over a third of the successful entries were printed on Mohawk’s exclusive Inxwell treated paper. The process, developed in the 1990s, gives uncoated papers significantly better print quality and much higher opacity was previously possible.
“Inxwell-treated papers had not been sold in New Zealand before Mohawk’s arrival last year, and I am not sure their full potential is yet fully realised here,” she said. “They retain the natural feel of premium uncoated papers – while achieving high ink holdout for crisp dot definition.”
The number of entries from outside the US expanded on the previous year and they supplied one of the winners and five of the finalists and Ms Aggelonitis was keen to encourage entries from New Zealand designers and printers.
“We know some superb work is being done here and would love to see New Zealand designers and printers gaining invaluable international exposure through success in the Mohawk Show.”
While entries must of course be printed on Mohawk papers, the choice of eligible stock has widened greatly with the recent acquisition of such major brands as Strathmore, Beckett and Via from International Papers.
Entries for the next Mohawk Show to be judged close in May 2006 (no charge, no limit on number of entries). Details are obtainable from BJ Ball specifier representatives.
