Kodak has launched an ink system for film to fabric printing projects.
Also known as DTF or direct to film, film to fabric ink systems have compatibility with most modified inkjet printers. They involve three components: powder, film, and ink. Kodak says DTF benefits include the ability to print on a wide variety of fabrics. These include natural fabrics, polyester, nylon, rayon, blends, and cotton. Second, it means less investment in hardware for a startup. Lastly, it allows more flexibility to accept customer printing projects.
Kodak’s film to fabric ink system includes Kodacolor powder and Kodacolor film. On top of this, it uses ink specially designed for film to fabric application. Customers with existing direct to garment printers have the option to use Kodacolor direct to garment inks with Kodacolor film and powder.
Low-cost option
The company sees the system as the ideal solution for fabric, print shop owners who want high-quality prints without the expense of a full fledged direct to garment fabric printing system. Also if they want to offer additional print projects on fabrics other than cotton to their customers.
Grant French, Kodak’s DTG and FTF product manager, says, “We are pleased to announce Kodak’s entry into this market. It gives more customers access to a high quality, lower cost business option to create amazing, printed fabric projects.”
Kodak has produced and sold digital inks for thermal piezo and continuous inkjet systems since the 1990s. The company says it has a strong history of innovation and excellence in the critical technologies needed to produce superior fabric inks and ink systems.
Customisation of fabrics for garments, accessories, upholstery and soft signage is growing. Consequently, this presents a significant business opportunity for Kodak in these segments.
