Police have arrested a man for allegedly producing a fake My Vaccine Pass.
The arrest last month came after a Stuff sting uncovered the counterfeiting operation in Canterbury.
NZSDA says the man is not a member.
Under the country’s traffic light system, you need a My Vaccine Pass to attend many businesses and venues. An amendment to the Covid-19 Response (Vaccinations) Legislation Bill makes the buying and selling of a vaccine certificate a criminal offence with penalties of up to six months in prison and up to $12,000 in fines.
Since the introduction of the vaccine passes, police have responded to, and continue to respond to, complaints regarding the misuse and fraudulent use of vaccine passes, which police undertake on a case by case basis.
The Ministry of Health says it will not tolerate fraudulent use or misuse of My Vaccine Passes. It encourages people, and businesses, checking My Vaccine Passes to request to see photo ID to verify the pass was issued to the person using it. Also, scanning passes is preferable to just viewing them.
