Its next generation inks just launched include VUTEk BioVu, the first solvent-based ink made from a renewable resource — corn — and the only ink recognized by the US Environmental Protection Agency.
BioVu delivers all the benefits of traditional solvent inks without the compromises inherent in eco-solvent and aqueous inks, EFI claims.
Other benefits include lower disposal costs since there are no hazardous materials and reduced odour on final printed materials. BioVu inks are for use on VUTEk UltraVu(R) II 3360 solvent printer, and EFI plans to expand BioVu inks to its other VUTEk solvent models later in the year.
The global exporter has long had a commitment to environmental issues. It has even come up with an innovative cooling system for its US headquarters which saves energy.
The company says that the cooling system which deploys a high-tech network of dampers and fans to import the naturally cool, clean air from the San Francisco Bay to maintain a comfortable workplace temperature, is saving approximately half a million dollars per year at its 28,000sm, 10-storey headquarters.
EFI had been working to reformulate its products for many years before the European Parliament published its guidelines for lead, mercury, cadmium and other potentially hazardous substances.
EFI’s advance work dating back to 2002 has enabled the company to implement changes globally well in advance of RoHS compliance being compulsory for products shipped solely to Europe.
