It is the first one to be sold into New Zealand by Duplo agent TS Wilson Jnr Ltd, after its release at the last Ipex show in the UK and Printech in Auckland last year.
The machine has made production times “50 times faster,” says finishing production manager, Raven Chandra.
“We used to do our creasing and saddle stitching on separate machines and then use the guillotine, so it has made a huge difference to feed it all in at one end and get the finished product out the other end” he adds.
The new Duplo 5000 also makes it easier for DPOD to offer a same day service for many jobs.
The company has recently moved into larger premises in Kingsland and is continuing to invest in new technology to automate much of their business. It’s the fourth move in 10 years for DPOD that has relocated as the business has grown.
Operations manager Ron Cuddy says the booklet making side of the business is also growing and the new machine is invaluable.
“You simply set it up and push a button and it’s all go” he says. “It’s very simple to use and very operator-friendly, ideal in fact for our type of operation. We haven’t had anything before that automated the saddle stitching.”
He says DPOD has been built on offering excellent quality and same day service where possible for all manner of digitally printed products from booklets to posters and pamphlets.
“People have always wanted booklets but it was hard to get them done in small quantities at an affordable price. Traditionally, finishing houses made a minimum charge for set up costs and this made it prohibitively expensive to produce smaller runs.”
“We typically do runs of less than 500 and our business is built on doing these smaller jobs very well” he says.
