The hand-held “Risk Reckoner” printed on behalf of ACC is a manual calculator enabling workers to quickly “score” the risk of their working actions, weight loads and working conditions by “dialling” in various information about their working environment. Although a simple tool to understand and operate, the process behind its creation entailled close liaison between various different entities and numerous trials.

Service Printers sales account manager Julie Russell says her Wellington-based company became involved after ACC, Clemenger BBDO, Phillip Fickling Dimensional Design and Art 2 Print Solutions had combined to create a working dummy.
The company is a three-time winner of Pride In Print’s prestigious Supreme Award

“They decided they liked the look of it and then said ‘how can we commercially produce this?’”, says Ms Russell.

“There are actually five moving parts in this particular calculator, so it is quite a complex unit.

“We made half-a-dozen working mock-ups with different substrates and laminates. We had to make sure the eyelets could withstand the pressure, because the top wheel has three parts within it so is quite a thickness.

“Then we made a couple of digitally-printed working die-cuts by hand.

“Initially it didn’t have a backing and you could see the working mechanism. But it was decided we needed to put information on the back, so that required us printing and gluing a panel on as the last piece.

“It took a good month until we got what we were after.”

The final printed job was ultimately die-cut and assembled at Wellington Print Finishers under Service Printers’ project management.

Although the Risk Reckoner was Service Printers’ most complicated wheel-based print job to date, Ms Russell says her company prides itself on its reputation for efficiently taking challenging art to final print.

“Phillip Fickling’s designs are incredibly complex. But our client Art 2 Print Solutions felt it was something we were good at and would be right up our alley.”
