Canon New Zealand has provided the Auckland branch of the SPCA with new equipment and technology to assist SPCA staff with their important work.

Canon has supplied the Mangere-based SPCA with two multifunctional copiers for use in the office, eight colour printers to assist in producing educational resources and marketing material and nine digital cameras.

The cameras will predominantly be used for animal inspectors to gather crucial evidence to produce in court in animal welfare cases.

David Lloyd-Barker, Inspectorate and Hospital Manager for the SPCA, says the new technology will benefit his team of eight inspectors who cover the Auckland area.  Last year Auckland’s SPCA staff attended to the needs of nearly 20,000 animals and approximately 5,000 animals of those were adopted by families.

“The digital cameras will assist in collecting evidence against animal welfare abuse,” says Lloyd-Barker.
The inspectors use the cameras on a daily basis to capture photographic evidence of injury to animals and to illustrate their living conditions.

“They are chuffed to bits to have the cameras.  The new technology is making our job that much easier and saving time and money.  Before receiving the cameras we were still using the traditional cameras which require film and the cost of processing was high.”

Canon Managing Director Tony Wills is delighted Canon is supporting the SPCA in its commitment to encouraging humane treatment of animals.

“We have had a close relationship with the SPCA for more than 10 years and we are proud to be associated with the SPCA and what it stands for,” he says.

Chief Executive of the Auckland SPCA, Bob Kerridge, is also delighted with the continuing relationship the SPCA has enjoyed with Canon over many years.

“Canon has always been a major supporter of our animal welfare work and has provided many essential items that have been most beneficial to us,” he says.

“One of the essential needs of a charity such as ours is the supply of product which we enjoy from a number of community-minded organisations, and Canon's generosity has never faulted over the years we have been associated – they are indeed most generous benefactors.”

The new technology will also be used in the newly established Education Centre which runs an education programme on animal welfare which reaches about 12,000 people annually through school and community group visits.
