The Waikato Times weekend edition beat out some heavyweight competition to claim the Canon Newspaper of the Year award at this year’s Canon Media Awards. An audience of around 450 attended a black tie dinner at Te Papa Museum in Wellington to hear the winners announced. Awards recipients comprised newspapers, magazines, websites, writers, columnists, cartoonists, reviewers, and photographers were The judges, who included Australian newspaper bosses Campbell Reid and Brett McCarthy ‘s news chief and West Australian newspaper editor Brett McCarthy. said the Waikato Times stood out this year for ambition, bold design and provocative journalism aimed directly at its readership. Generating no small amount of interest, the awards attracted 1603 entries in 64 categories. Jonathan MacKenzie, editor at the Waikato Times, said he thought the award reflected the hard work his team had put into the paper over the past couple of years. He said, “”Staff have weathered many changes but have adapted well and continue to produce stories, photos and videos which are relevant and important to our community and readers.” The New Zealand Herald took out the plus 30,000 circulation newspaper gong and the Taranaki Daily News won the minus 30,000 circulation award. Home magazine won Magazine of the Year and Kapi-Mana News won Community Newspaper of the Year. Kim Conner, managing director for Canon New Zealand managing director said the calibre of this year’s submissions reflected what it meant to be the best of New Zealand journalism.
