Expected to address hot industry topics of freedom of information and the importance of world’s best practice for environmental management by the newspaper industry, Rudd will be the first prime minister to open the event in its 39-year history.

Freedom of information simmers as a contentious issue between newspaper publishers and the Australian government, with publishers there recently forming a lobby group to fight for press freedom.

Rudd heads a list of impressive speakers, including senior executives from News Corp, Fairfax Media, APN, The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The World Association of Newspapers, KPMG, Telstra, Norkse Skog, ATEX, IFRA.

In addition there will be a host of practical workshops on diverse subjects including:

* Modern newspaper design – from the leading design guru Mario Garcia;

* Building community – practical steps from editors of regional and local newspapers;

* How to use podcasts to build new audiences, win new business – cheaply and efficiently;

* Bundling print and online ads – how and when to do it: strategy and execution;

* Best practice retailing – practical steps to sell more newspapers at the newsagent;

* Cost models – the IFRA best practice tutorial, and

* Worker safety obligations – a mock trial with delegates in the dock for negligence.

PANPA08 takes place from September 8-10, at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast.
