Koenig & Bauer chief executive Claus Bolza-Schünemann has received the Friedrich Koenig medal presented alongside the general assembly of the German Association of Printing and Paper Technology within the German Mechanical Engineering Association (VDMA).
Inaugurated in 1953, in memory of the 18th century inventor of the steam powered cylinder printing press, the Friedrich Koenig medal celebrates outstanding services to the press manufacturing industry.
Friedrich Koenig founded press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer with Andreas Bauer in 1817. 201 years later, Koenig’s great-great-great grandson Claus Bolza-Schünemann manages the company, the sixth generation family member to do so. Claus Bolza-Schünemann, says, “I am deeply honoured to receive this award,” said Bolza-Schünemann at the award ceremony. “This award rounds off our 200-year company anniversary perfectly.”
The award honours leading figures in the printing industry for their services to research and education in the press manufacturing industry, recognising services in the technical development of printing press construction and rationalisation in German printing press manufacture.
The committee selecting the recipient of the Friedrich-Koenig medal includes the general manager of FGD – the Research Association Printing Machines.
The only non-German to have won the award, Ted Cyman, received the medal for his work with variable data printing at North American-based global outfit RR Donnelly in 2015.
