Visitors to drupa 2016 may get to see live demonstrations of the Nanographic digital inkjet presses previewed four years ago.
Benny Landa’s company says it will take orders for the presses, adding that it will ship them next year, thought it has not specified if that applies to all or just some of the range.
Promising offset quality at offset speeds (13,000sph) but with the digital benefits of no prepress, no plates, no waste, no makeready, and variable data printing, the Landa’s Nanograophic presses will print on regular offset stocks.
Landa says the pricing will be ‘offset competitive per print’ although what that exactly means has not yet been revealed, we don’t know for instance whether that is press to press, or whether that includes the cost of prepress and plates, which Nano presses do not need.
The press line-up has slimmed down from the seven at drupa 2012 to three this time around: the S10 B1 single sided sheetfed press, the S10P B1 perfecting (duplex) press, and the webfed W10 metre wide flexible packaging press

The Landa Nano press’s roll out has fallen behind the original schedule announced at drupa 2012, where some 400 printers paid $10,000 each for a place in the queue to buy a Nano press. However, should Landa come up with the goods, all will be forgiven.
Sceptics maintain that printers will take a risk investing in a volatile new technology that essentially does what an offset press does for the same price. There is no makeready, but today’s B1 offset presses makeready in less than ten minutes.
