THE Stone Paper Company has received its certificate for winning the New Zealand section of the international Energy Globe Awards, aimed at highlighting successful sustainable projects to a global audience.
Energy Globe, founded in Austria, awards a certificate to the best project in each of the 177 participating countries. Alan Good, director at Stone Paper, accepted the award at a function hosted at Blum in Auckland by Advantage Austria, which had just spent a week promoting trade and ties between Austrian and New Zealand businesses and organisations. Good delivered a presentation to an appreciative audience of Kiwi and Austrian business people who showed a keen interest in the applications for the product.
B&F papers distributes Rockstock paper in New Zealand and the Pacific. The Stone Paper Company plays a role in adding new items to the Rockstock paper range along with new finished products and exporting some finished products to other countries. Good says, “The introduction of the high quality coated rich mineral paper trademarked as Rockstock, Rocktherm and Rocktak in New Zealand has shown a very strong difference in environmental preference in that the manufacture of these papers and associated products produce no airborne, waterborne or solid waste.
“It uses no water; no acid, base or bleach; no phalates; no halogens; and no optical brighteners. It uses little energy and is non-toxic. The production of the paper uses a waste resource, using up to 81 per cent waste stone(marble) from quarries, and offcuts from the cutting of building tiles with a small amount of non-toxic, recyclable, compostable and photo-degradable resin. Even if burned, there is no toxic smoke.”
Rockstock products have gained a number of certifications including Environmental Choice; Cradle2Cradle; RoHs; Reach; Manufactured under ISO14001, 9001 and food grade compliance. Good adds, “To be honoured with this award recognises our work for a better environment and it motivates us to continue our endeavours in the future. The Energy Globe campaign has been going for 30 years, helping to educate people about the sensible and economical use of resources and the use of renewable forms, so this award marks a significant milestone for Stone Paper here.”
Globally, the awards campaign received 1500 entries. Judges will determine an overall winner later in the year.
