As the world’s tennis elite gather for the series, Domino-manufactured continuous ink jet printers and a Heidelberg B1 six-colour sheet fed press have been taking centre court at label manufacturer Tipografic, to deliver a Wimbledon Text to Win promotional campaign for Britvic’s leading squash brand, Robinsons.
Domino Printing Sciences is a UK company based in Cambridge, and a world-leader in ink jet and laser technologies offering total coding and printing solutions. The company is represented in New Zealand by Codemark Ltd.
The Wimbledon promotion features a unique code, printed onto the reverse of specially printed Robinsons squash bottle labels. Consumers text the eight digit code to see if they have won exclusive centre court seats at the Wimbledon Championships.
This is the first time a promotion of this kind has been printed on a sheet fed printing press in the UK using the Domino A400 and Editor GT controller with an off-set press.
The key to the success of this promotion was to find a cost-effective solution that would both generate and manage 60 million unique codes and print them onto bottle labels of varying sizes, inline, within Tipografic’s existing label production line at its Birkenhead facility, the company says.
Up to nine Domino A400 high speed printers were installed across a Heidelberg B1 six colour sheet fed press to deliver the unique codes, managed by a Domino Editor GT controller, capable of processing high quantities of variable codes to match Tipografic’s Just In Time (JIT) production output.
A specially constructed aluminium cradle had to be initially designed, manufactured and fitted to one of the printing decks in order to accommodate the nine A400 printing jets, which were necessary to print a random selection of codes across the sheet. And, despite Robinsons bringing their production schedule forward by two weeks, Tipografic was able to respond well within schedule.
