Graham Judd regularly runs workshops at Birkenhead Library

Inkiana Press’s Graham Judd is taking his 1833 Albion press to the Wairarapa and Waikato for a series of letterpress workshops next month.

The first workshop takes place at the Greytown Christmas Carnival. Graham will run an all-day Christmas themed workshop, with help from Terrie Reddish, well known artist, printer, and bookbinder. He will travel to Masterton for a poster printing workshop using a selection of his large wood type.

Graham will then travel to Te Awamutu for two workshops, hosted by the local museum and library. Finally, he will complete two half day workshops at the Waikato Society of Arts in Hamilton.

In 2020, Graham had a special trailer built to transport the press, and he has travelled the country sharing his knowledge and skills in letterpress. On this trip, he says he “will take quite a load of letterpress equipment”.

He says, “As well as the 310kg Albion, I will have a small bench top press; trays of wood and metal type; furniture; chases; inks; wash-up materials; paper; and even aprons.

Graham served his apprenticeship as a letterpress machinist in Masterton, so is taking letterpress back to where it all started for him. He says, “There is still quite an interest in the letterpress process, and over the past 12 years, I have had the pleasure of training many people in the basics of setting type; locking up a forme; and printing with small presses.”

He has trained people to run Heidelberg 10×15 platens, and helped two ladies to the point where they have set up their own successful letterpress businesses. Graham regularly runs beginners workshops at the Birkenhead Library in Auckland.

Graham adds, “Anyone interested in the workshops is welcome to contact me to arrange to call in to see or participate in one: phone 022 072 6771 or email graham@inkianapress.co.nz
