Wellington digital printer The Big Picture has upgraded its finishing technology with a Morgana Digifold Pro.

The company purchased the new unit through Ferrostaal New Zealand. Chris Lock, managing director at The Big Picture, says, “It replaces an older Morgana unit, adding much-needed speed, accuracy and reliability, as well as significantly reducing the setup time between jobs.

“After ironing out the kinks in the training period, the machine is performing very well. Wastage has been significantly reduced with fewer overs, and it has added the ability to offer in-line perforating.”

He adds that the company needs to produce the same quality and speed that its customers expect over a range of products. He says, “Both the speed and quality of production has improved overall and the machine has reduced finishing bottlenecks. Not only that, the user-friendly controls of the Morgana are allowing more of our staff to learn the ropes rather than relying on a single trained operator.”

The company used the purchase as a project for one of the its employees, Elliot Ramsden, enrolled in a print-management diploma through Print NZ. Lock says Ramsden looked closely at its features and the expected return on investment to help determine the investment potential.

Lock started The Big Picture with Hamish Woulfe in 2008 as a low-cost printing service for students in Wellington with one wide format printer. It now operates a range of machinery, with eight wide format digital presses and the accompanying finishing equipment. Its customer base ranges from small businesses through to nationwide chains and Government departments.
