Dunedin’s Southern Colour Print has become the first company in the Australia New Zealand region to win Kodak’s Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award.

Pride In Print supreme award winner in 2016, Southern Colour Print operates in both security and non-security printing markets in New Zealand and internationally. Recognised around the world for producing exceptional quality postage stamps, visa labels, examination question papers and other publications in a secure environment, the company now adds this environmentally-based award to its list of achievements.

Sean McMahon, managing director of Southern Colour Print says, “The Kodak Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award was a good one for us to win because it fits so well with our environmental goals. The processless plates that we get from Kodak – those types of innovations – they are helping to reduce our waste and reduce our costs in that area. And it ties in with our carbon management that we embarked on a few years ago.

“We also feel pleased Kodak has recognised it too. Our staff appreciate the plates because it changes the work environment. The prepress no longer has that smell; it now smells like an office.”

In addition to reducing environmental impact with Sonora Process Free plates, the company recycles paper, plate metal and plastics and uses vegetable-based inks, alcohol-free solvents, and sustainably harvested recycled papers. He says, “We are looking forward to a good year ahead and this award has given us a great start.”

Grant Campbell, country manager for Kodak New Zealand, says Southern Colour Print joins an elite group of printers from around the globe in winning the 2017 Sonora Plate Green Leaf Award. He says, “It’s exciting that Southern Colour is the first New Zealand or Australian winner of the award,

“Southern Colour has done a lot of work to achieve this award, implementing environmental and sustainable innovations into its business. We are certainly excited working with them as a partner as their business continues to evolve.”

Kodak says its Sonora Process Free Plates yield dramatic environmental and economic benefits for customers without sacrificing quality and output. Sonora p plates remove the need for the plate processor, which requires chemicals, water, and energy, while generating waste.
