Hexicon has announced that it has completed its purchase of the global ink and adhesive resins business of Akzo Nobel.

The purchase of the business will help Columbus-based Hexion expand its international customer base and diversify the technologies it offers, the company says.
Hexion produces and sells a range of thermosetting and specialty resins, including rosin resins, hydrocarbon resins, rosin-hydrocarbon hybrid resins (“hybrid resins”), alkyd resins, acrylic dispersions and others.

Akzo Nobel’s Inks and Adhesive Resins business mainly manufactures products based on rosin (a pine tree derivative), including rosin resins, hybrid resins and other rosin products, with a focus on printing inks and the adhesives industries.

It has more than 90 production and distribution facilities in 18 countries including The Netherlands, Portugal, China, New Zealand, Argentina, Canada and the United States and employs approximately 7,000 people worldwide.

The main impact of the transaction is on resins used for the printing ink industry, and in particular on rosin resins.

Hexion Specialty Chemicals is owned by an affiliate of Apollo Management, L.P.
